Yahoo’s board of directors has approved a $1.1 billion acquisition of blogging platform Tumblr, according to a breaking news alert from The Wall Street Journal.
The deal is reportedly an all-cash acquisition, according to WSJ. Tumblr and Yahoo have not released any official statements.
There were rumors circulating Friday about the Tumblr acquisition, which stated Yahoo’s board, under the direction of still-new CEO Marissa Mayer, would discuss the potential over the weekend.
According to a report from AllThingsD, Mayer was interested in the platform’s younger-skewing user base, and had been in talks with the board about Tumblr for the last six weeks. AllThingsDalso reported no other parties made bids on Tumblr.
Yahoo is planning a large press conference in New York Monday, which helped give those rumors credence.

well this should be interesting
What does this mean for us???
The BBC article says:
Under the terms of the acquisition, Tumblr would continue to operate as an independent business, the Wall Street Journal said, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.
So hopefully that means that they won’t really be able to mess with Tumblr that much, just own it and reap the profits…?
what profits? tumblr has been surviving on investments so far, and i doubt the sponsored dashboard/radar posts are a viable solution.
honestly this is just a desperate (and expensive) attempt by yahoo to reclaim the 18-25 demographic and seem ‘cool’ again. i mean, they’re paying more for tumblr than facebook paid for instagram. that’s just ridiculous.
Oh, I completely agree with your comment about the “cool youngsters”. It’s really frustrating and garrgghhhh…
…and also the profits are coming from them dramatically increasing the number of adverts around the site…gross.
they’ve already implemented sponsored posts on the iphone and android apps
it’s so annoying but at the end of the day tumblr IS a business and like any other business they have to make money somehow
i just think yahoo will put a lot more pressure on tumblr to make a return on their investment (although i don’t think facebook’s done that with instagram, as far as i know there’s no advertising on there so yahoo might just leave tumblr alone…)

you are allowed to walk away from people who hurt you
you are allowed to be angry and selfish and unforgiving
you don’t owe anyone an explanation for taking care of yourself
